Guy Leeder
Clovis’ Mr. Softball
1942 - 2007
Guy & I were married at Christmas time
in 1968. I had no idea what softball was or how much Guy
was already involved with the game. That spring, I got a
rude awaking, when Guy put his shorts and tennis shoe’s
on; gathered up his bat bag and headed for the field. I
didn’t see him again until fall and the cowboy image I had
of the man I had married was replaced with one of a softball
player.
There was just one field; it was where Dickenson
Little League Field is now.
Guy could see a bigger picture for softball in those early
years, as the program he helped start with a few Jaycees,
grew from that one small field at the corner of Sycamore
& 14th Street to the complex we have now.
Guy Leeder Softball Complex as become one
of the nicest softball complexes in New Mexico. Guy’s vision
is a reality that players and their families will enjoy
for a very long time. The Clovis Softball Association will
continue to run and take care of Guy’s vision. They will
need the help of every team manager and player, spouse and
child. Guy always said that it was their ball parks not
his.
Guy wanted to grow old, watering the trees
at the Complex, watching each player and their children’s
children play the game of softball. I believe Guy is watching,
knowing that the love of the game is still going strong
here in Clovis.
